Statement of Values

Paper from the Board of Trustees

A professional communications manager is characterised by a deep understanding of the norms and values relevant to his or her field, as well as the areas of conflict that can arise from the collision of diverse interests. Gaining this understanding, as well as learning to navigate the areas of conflict between societal and organisational interests, must be an integral part of an academic education in the communications management field.

Legitimacy

Communications management is based on the understanding that the organised representation of interests is a legitimate, necessary and constitutionally guaranteed aspect of our society's democratic order.

The articulation of organisations' interests is a necessary prerequisite for a diversity of information and topics in the public debate. In this way, communications management makes a significant contribution to the democratic decision-making process.

The industry's ethics codices - such as the Code d'Athènes or the Code de Lisbonne - provide important guidelines. They act as a behaviour guide, particularly in situations where divergent interests cause conflict. The valid regulatory framework serves as a basis for the way that every communications manager acts in the context of his or her daily business activities.

Professionalism

In this area, communications managers have the same high level of responsibility for both the success of their organisation and the diversity of opinions in society. This responsibility requires that communications managers have detailed knowledge of the progress and effects of communications processes in all of their complexity.

Quadriga University provides its students with the necessary theoretical and practical basis to accomplish these tasks. The programme teaches students more than just how to apply their knowledge: it also gives them the tools to comprehend complex interrelationships.

Professional responsibility

On the one hand, communications management fulfils legitimate institutional needs and acts in the interest of business or politics. At the same time, it must also meet society's requirements, particularly the public's need for information. In this case, communications management works toward reconciling divergent interests.

Responsible behaviour in conflict situations requires sensitivity for such tense relationships. The goal of Quadriga University Berlin's programme is to increase students' understanding of ethical imperatives in communications management and to make students more aware of the varied demands that arise when dealing with divergent interest groups.

The programme will direct students down the paths that will allow them to navigate these areas of conflict professionally and responsibly.
