Presidential Address

The challenges of the information society

"Our era is shaped by the increasing pervasiveness of the media, combined with the constant expansion of knowledge and the acceleration of development and decision-making processes. Society is growing ever faster, ever more complex. Political and economic decisions are marked by a high degree of abstraction, while the situation of the individual is determined by an increasing loss of orientation and experience. Information is a central virtue in this society, which is why it is characterised as an information society.

To ensure this society's cohesion, we must clarify contexts, pass on knowledge, create understanding and reduce complexity. This is the eternal challenge for anyone involved in the communications field.

This includes journalists and publicists, but as I know from my own career experience, it also includes PR professionals and communications managers in companies, political or other public institutions, unions and organisations.

They make a significant contribution to informing decision-makers and the public about content and concerns. They translate abstract, complex concepts and make them understandable."

Contribution of communications management: information and mediation

"In a democratic society, communications management is mainly charged with the task of articulating interests and opening them up for public discussion

This discourse focuses on the legitimacy of these interests, on persuasion, and especially on understanding and consensus. Communications management gains a societal dimension here. The more often organisations come under public scrutiny and the more diverse and complex institutional requirements become, the higher the demands on the field will get.

Resolving this issue professionally will require experienced, insightful members of the profession. Today's communications director is not an appendix in his or her organisation. He or she is at the centre of a wide range of communications and information relationships. He or she is an all-rounder who knows how to handle disparate interests in a consensus-orientated manner and who can manage communications processes. To do so, he or she must demonstrate extensive knowledge of his or her own area of expertise as well as the ability to act with confidence in economic or political-societal contexts."

Well-founded education as a contribution to professionalising the field

"One important basis is a well-founded education. Surveys have shown that both the academic and career worlds desire a stronger, better educational foundation in the communications management field.

Quadriga University Berlin will do its part to make this a reality. It will also be a contribution to making the field both more academic and more professional. The university's proven interdisciplinary structure, with its multiple competencies, offers an educational programme that meets the requirements of communications managers in business and politics."
